Kerala’s backwaters comprise a distinctive network of interconnected canals, lakes, rivers, and lagoons that flow parallel to the Arabian Sea. This ecosystem is sustained by a delicate equilibrium of freshwater and seawater, providing a vital habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna.
However, the true essence of the backwaters lies beyond the picturesque landscapes; it is defined by the unique local lifestyle. Vibrant villages flourish along these waterways, where residents rely on traditional boating for transportation, employ age-old fishing techniques, and cultivate rice in fields situated below sea level.
Kerala is renowned for its serene backwaters and iconic houseboat cruises, offering a quintessential travel experience that everyone should encounter at least once. Whether you are planning a tranquil getaway with your spouse or a memorable family vacation, Kerala provides the perfect destination. Rover Holidays invites you to discover the magic of this natural paradise by booking our bespoke Kerala Backwaters tour package, tailored for both romantic escapes and quality family time.
Visiting the backwaters of Kerala offers far more than scenic beauty and traditional sightseeing; it provides a profound opportunity to immerse oneself in a unique rhythm of life shaped by water, nature, and cultural heritage. Our comprehensive Kerala backwater tour package features an iconic houseboat cruise designed to offer an unparalleled experience. Furthermore, the region boasts several distinct characteristics that render it an essential destination for every traveler:
I For nature enthusiasts, exploring the backwaters of Kerala is a truly rewarding experience. This serene and picturesque network of interconnected lagoons, lakes, and canals historically served as a vital route for fishing and local trade. In many areas, small villages remain linked by these tranquil waterways rather than traditional roads, resulting in a stunning landscape of lush greenery and pristine water. The environment offers an immersive and surreal atmosphere that is perfect for those seeking peace and natural beauty.
A quintessential highlight of any Kerala backwater excursion is an overnight stay on a traditional houseboat, offering a truly unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience. Consequently, many travelers prioritize including Alleppey in their Kerala itinerary to immerse themselves in the serenity of these tranquil backwaters.
These houseboats function as floating villas, offering modern amenities while preserving their traditional charm. Each unit features a private bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. Guests will enjoy freshly prepared meals served on board, alongside personalized service and total privacy.
Beyond the serene houseboat cruises, the Kerala Backwaters offer an unparalleled birdwatching experience defined by a rich, diverse ecosystem. As you traverse these tranquil waters, you will have the opportunity to observe a variety of avian species and vibrant butterflies in their natural habitat. This seamless blend of breathtaking landscapes and thriving wildlife establishes the Kerala Backwaters as a premier destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Kerala’s backwaters offer a seamless blend of authentic traditional charm and modern luxury. Historically utilized for trade, fishing, and local transportation, these iconic waterways now feature houseboats that function as refined, floating villas. While preserving their classic aesthetic through traditional wooden interiors, these vessels are equipped with premium amenities, including air conditioning, private bathrooms, well-appointed bedrooms, and expansive windows that provide panoramic views of the scenic landscape.
Kerala is renowned for its serene backwaters, verdant landscapes, and profound cultural heritage. The state is celebrated primarily for its tranquil backwater networks, which provide breathtaking vistas, a sense of profound peace, and unparalleled travel experiences. Below is a curated list of premier destinations to explore Kerala’s backwaters, offering a diverse array of experiences ranging from vibrant houseboat hubs to serene, pristine waterways.
Alleppey, or Alappuzha, remains one of the most prominent backwater destinations in Kerala and is a primary point of interest for most travelers. Frequently referred to as the "Venice of the East," it serves as an ideal destination for first-time visitors. The region acts as a central hub for a diverse range of houseboats, catering to both luxury and budget-conscious travelers. As the most renowned and accessible gateway to the backwaters, Alleppey is the premier choice for houseboat cruising, photography, and cultural immersion.
Kumarakom serves as an exquisite destination within the Kerala backwaters, offering a serene and tranquil retreat. Nestled on the banks of Vembanad Lake, the region provides a sophisticated and leisurely experience, making it an ideal choice for couples embarking on a Kerala honeymoon. Its calm waters and exclusive atmosphere ensure privacy away from the crowds. Visitors may enjoy premium lakeside resorts and renowned Ayurvedic retreats designed to rejuvenate both body and soul, or engage in birdwatching at the acclaimed Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary.
Kollam, one of the region's oldest port cities, remains a hidden gem for travelers seeking to experience the Kerala backwaters away from the typical tourist crowds. Centered around the serene Ashtamudi Lake, this destination offers an authentic and tranquil alternative to the more frequented areas like Alappuzha. As you journey through lush paddy fields, verdant coconut groves, and quiet, remote villages, Kollam provides an immersive and in-depth exploration of the backwaters. For those in search of an unspoiled and peaceful retreat, Kollam serves as an ideal destination.
Poovar is an exquisite, lesser-known destination within the Kerala backwaters that is essential to any itinerary. This unique location serves as a rare confluence where the river, lake, lagoon, and sea converge with the coastline. Gliding through these serene backwaters adjacent to golden sand beaches provides an idyllic setting, making it a premier destination for couples seeking a peaceful retreat or a romantic honeymoon experience in Kerala.
I For travelers seeking an authentic and unspoiled experience, Bekal is an ideal destination. This pristine backwater region of Kerala remains largely untouched by commercial development, offering a beautifully raw landscape. Situated in the vicinity of the historic Bekal Fort, its serene waterways and scattered islands make it an essential addition to any Kerala itinerary.
Although Kuttanad may not be as widely recognized as other backwater regions in Kerala, it remains an essential destination for travelers. The region possesses a distinct charm that is truly captivating, with its picturesque landscapes, sprawling paddy fields, and serene atmosphere offering a perfect retreat for couples seeking tranquility. Kuttanad stands as a peaceful haven, characterized by lush rice paddies bordered by tranquil waterways.
Situated in northern Kerala, Nileshwaram is a serene and pristine backwater destination that remains largely unexplored. In contrast to the bustling tourism hubs of the south, it offers an undisturbed, tranquil atmosphere, making it an ideal retreat for those seeking authentic relaxation. For travelers in pursuit of a hidden gem that promises quietude and scenic beauty away from the crowds, Nileshwaram is an exemplary choice.

However, visiting the Kerala backwaters is not only about the beautiful sightseeing and houseboat cruising, but it is also about immersing yourself in the everyday life, culture, and tradition. Here are the local experiences that you will love to do during your Kerala backwater tour.
Kerala’s backwaters are the most famous tourist attraction in the state. It is said that a Kerala tour is incomplete without adding its backwaters to the itinerary. Ideally, 1 night and 2 days are sufficient to stay in a houseboat in Kerala’s backwaters. But if someone wants to fully immerse themselves in the tranquillity of the backwaters and experience the slow-paced lifestyle, they are recommended to spend 2-3 days.
24 hours in a houseboat in Kerala’s backwaters is the most luxurious option, while spending 2-3 days on a houseboat allows you to explore the nearby villages, remote channels, and also enjoy a relaxed trip without rushing to the next destination.
At Rover Holidays, you can book a 2-night and 3-day Kerala backwaters tour package. These tour packages are specially designed for families and couples to explore Kumarakom, Alleppey, and Kovalam. Packages can also be extended to explore nearby tourist places such as Munnar, Cochin, and Thekkady.
The best time for the Kerala backwaters tour is from October to March. It is the peak tourist season in the state due to the pleasant weather. However, if you are on a budget, you can plan your Kerala tour during the off-season between April and June. Although the season is warm, it is less crowded. You even get good discounts during the season.
Apart from this, one of the best times to visit Kerala is during the monsoon season from July to September. You will see the unmatched beauty during the monsoon. It turns into a lush green paradise, creating a romantic setting for couples. If you are a nature lover or a photographer, planning a Kerala backwaters tour in the rainy season offers a unique experience.
